I recently started participating in a new type of professional networking site that feels like a blend of Facebook, LinkedIn, and Quora, with a more personal touch. I know, you are a PhD student, you aren’t looking for a job right now. But really, I think this could grow to be a helpful resource for us all! Originally developed for women in the computer science community, TenXList is currently expanding to be home for women across science and technology fields for networking, obtaining insider information, and encouraging each other professionally.
TenXList is an interconnected network of women, most of whom are currently in college or graduate school. The majority of members join via invitation from a friend/colleague, but you can also apply to join via the homepage. Although this may seem odd at first, I think this connect-by-invitation model seems to work well in this context. The site is filled with real people (no bots!) and I have yet to see ‘trolling’ behavior. Instead, I see people ask great questions to the community and receive thoughtful and helpful responses.
In addition to asking questions of the community, I see job postings direct from companies and inside information about peoples’ professional experiences as the greatest assets that TenxList provides. Although these perks are available in other places as well, many other avenues are scattered, anonymous and quite general, leading to misinformation. Currently, TenX is partnering with Facebook, Quora, Pandora, Electronic Arts, Bloomberg, and Pinterest for job recruitment and internships. I’m hoping that they will be adding a few more life sciences companies soon…!
In the future, they hope to include more audiences, beginning with an expansion from computer scientists to the larger STEM community. I am excited to see what they can accomplish in this space. In a similar vein to what we (BPC) are hoping to achieve, TenX focuses on humanizing the professional job search and networking process through conversations with real people. Maybe it’s time we go beyond stalking our favorite company’s website and employees’ LinkedIn profiles and start talking to them instead?
